The Zalani are a minor spacefaring race of gargoyle-like explorers and shipwrights native to Zalanispace in the Spelljammer campaign setting.[1]
Overview[]
The Zalani are a winged race of humanoids who are primarily travelers and ambassadors who prefer to trade and negotiate on behalf of other races. After being conquered by Emperor Vulkaran's forces, they have become the premier ship builders in the Vodoni Empire.[1]
Description[]
The Zalani resemble fearsome black-skinned gargoyle-like creatures and are considered among the most terrifying humanoid races in the Known Spheres.[1]
Behavior[]
Despite their horrifying appearance, the Zalani are basically a peaceful race whose sense of aesthetics and artistic design just happen to include great gaping maws and huge black wings. They have no idea that their mostly peaceful interaction with other races is due to their fearsome and imposing appearance.[1]
Combat[]
In battle the Zalani wield great two-handed swords as long as a man.[2]
Society[]
Of all the subjugated races of the Twelve Spheres, the Zalani have perhaps the most autonomy simply because they are so indispensable to Vulkaran’s ambitions.[1]
Signature Spelljammers[]
A typical Zalani ship resembles a huge black winged gargoyle with blazing red eyes.[3] As the premier shipwrights of the Vodoni Empire, all Vodoni vessels feature the distinctive winged appearance preferred by Zalani craftsmen and are themselves masterpieces of workmanship.[1]
