Undead are creatures that have died, but have subsequently been reanimated, usually through necromantic magic or exposure to negative energy, and can be encountered in the Spelljammer campaign setting.[1]

Overview[]

Undead are commonplace throughout the Known Spheres, and can be found wherever there are living creatures. They are also perfectly adapted to travel in wildspace in that they require little in the way of food or air.[2] While most undead can travel into the phlogiston without problem, those with close ties to the Plane of negative energy, including many incorporeal undead, find the experience unnerving and prefer not to. Those with close ties to other planes, especially the other transitive planes such as the Ethereal plane, cannot enter the Flow at all.[3]

While undead are by their very nature closely linked with the living, there are entire worlds dominated by the living dead, including Charon, also known as the "planet of the dead",[4] and Gnibile in Greyspace,[5] where some catastrophic event has led to the annihilation of the entire living population, and given rise to innumerable undead, both corporeal and incorporeal. There is even an entire crystal sphere, known as Darkspace, where the only sentient beings are various undead creatures created by the vampire lord T'Laan.[6]

Typical undead ships[]

Undead can be encountered using any available ship design. Such a vessel will typically feature moldy sails, tattered rigging and hulls infested by krajen spores and other parasites, such as mortiss, and is usually referred to as a ghost ship. While some ships may be powered by a spelljamming helm or some other magical engine, often times ships crewed entirely by undead will coast through wildspace until they encounter another vessel or asteroid community. Undead have nothing but time, and are quite content to drift through the enormous distances involved.[2]

While intelligent undead often make use of ship designs they used when they were alive, the undead in general are primarily associated with the antlership,[7] the skeletonship[2][8] and the pyramidship.[9][10]
