Ranais, the Funereal World, is a planet mentioned in the PLANESCAPE Campaign Setting.[1]

Overview[]

Ranais, also known as Funereal, is a world enveloped in perpetual night. Its' sun is a tiny, white firebody that provides little warmth or illumination. Ranais appears to be a dead world, inhabited only by monstrous creatures and the undead.[1] Ranais can be reached through a portal from the Market Ward of the planar city Sigil.[2]

History of Ranais[]

The entire population of Ranais once revered death, and each city-state devoted itself to the worship of a particular death god, including the demon lord Orcus. When the great city Moil turned from the worship of Orcus, the archfiend punished his errant worshippers by gating the entire city and its population into a demiplane, possibly forever. As a consequence, Ranais was wracked with chaos and strife, until eventually the city-states all fell to ruin. Those who could, escaped, while the rest all perished. Ranais is a world that resonates with death.[1]

Inhabitants[]

Ranais is inhabited by undead, primarily spirits of the dead who haunt the various ruined cities. Known as the Lovelost, many of these wraiths are the spirits of those who survived the climactic cataclysm that destroyed Ranais. While most people fled, some were unable to leave or simply chose to stay and die with their beloved home. Forced to live the rest of their lives on a ruined world, they eventually died, but their spirits remain, and continue to haunt their home.[1]
