A Portal Locator is a magical item mounted on a spelljamming ship from the Spelljammer campaign setting.[1]

Description[]

The portal locator was developed by the Arcane, who designed it to locate the nearest portal through the crystal shell between the phlogiston and wildspace. The device is fairly accurate (within 90%), and is often thrown in as a "freebie" by Arcane salesmen when concluding a deal.

Powers[]

The portal locator duplicates the effects of the locate portal spell. The portal locator may only be used when within 100 yards (91 meters) of the surface of the crystal shell. The portal locator will then find the nearest portal leading through the shell, either into or out of the Flow. The device indicates the distance and direction (expressed in miles or travel time). Generally, naturally occuring portals of the appropriate size may be found within 2 to 20 days travel from the ship's current location. However, there is no guarantee: their may be more naturally occurring portals than normal, less than normal, or none at all.[2]

Variants[]

A portable version of the portal locator is known to exist and is marketed by certain Arcane merchants. The device functions in a similar fashion as the full-sized ship mounted version, though it is only accurate 20% of the time. The device is pocket sized and may be purchased for around 400 gp.[3]
