The Habitat is a large, mysterious structure (or vessel) that orbits the system primary Oerth in the crystal sphere known as Greyspace.[1]
Description[]
The Habitat is an ellipsoidal structure, about 1 mile (1.6 kilometre) in diameter along its major axis and about half that in height (along its minor axis). Made of some dark blue–grey material, the structures’ surface is studded with thousands of strange conical protrusions about 10 yards (10 meters) in diameter at the base and 10 yards (10 meters) high. In between the protrusions are many circular windows or portholes about 5 yards (5 meters) in diameter. Yellow light streams from these portholes into wildspace, and passing ships have reported seeing strange creatures of various kinds looking out of these windows.
Spelljammers that have attempted to approach the mysterious structure have discovered that as soon as they get closer than 100 yards (100 metres), they suddenly find themselves a mile or more from their original position, a 100 yards from the Habitat, and moving away from the structure. Crew members onboard these ships that have reported that they felt nothing during the transition, and that it occurred almost instantaneously. Some sages speculate that the Habitat is surrounded by a field that warps space-time, meaning that the point in space where the ship disappeared from, and the point where it subsequently reappeared, are in some way contiguous.[1]
History[]
The Habitat was first detected about 50 years ago. It is unclear whether it had been present in Greyspace for longer than that and had simply escaped notice - not an unreasonable conjecture considering the size of the structure, its distance from any habitable planets, and its perpendicular orbit to the ecliptic. no one knows how long the strange object will remain in Greyspace, or what its purpose is. The deities of Greyspace won't even discuss the matter, and in fact seem downright edgy if questioned by their worshippers.[1]
