Groundling is a generic term that is used to refer to people, creatures, items, objects and ships that originated on or are native to a world or planet as opposed to wildspace in the Spelljammer campaign setting.[1][2] The term may also be used in a derogatory fashion, implying that the object or person is inferior to those that are native to wildspace,[3] though in its mildest form, calling a person a "groundling" suggests they are naive or ignorant in some way. An even more derogatory term is that of "dirtkicker".[4]

"Problem with most groundlings is, they've been big fish in a small pond.
Well, there ain't no bigger pond than Wildspace, friends, and the fish out here get big. Mighty big."
- Mordreggan Zudrik, dwarven veteran and miner.[5]

"Sometimes it amazes me how different things are here in space than at home.
Then again, there are other times when I am just as astonished at how much things are the same."
- Fevlin Nestral, once of Waterdeep, now of the Rock of Bral.[6]
