Gamalon's Gem of infravision and detect magic
Lord Gamalon Idogyr was a powerful mage, sage and shop owner on the Rock of Bral in the Spelljammer campaign setting.[3][4]
Overview[]
Gamalon Idogyr had been a famous adventurer and explorer before retiring to the Rock of Bral, where he bought some property from the Crown and became a noble landowner. One of the most powerful mages on Bral, Gamalon was an expert on magical items, especially those related to spelljamming or spelljamming technology. He also opened a small shop known as Gamalon's Curios that bought and sold unusual magical items, especially those items that would be of interest to spacefarers.[3][5]
Description[]
Gamalon was a human of indeterminate age, whose face was marked by old scars that slashed across his face and left eye.[3] He had lost the eye when he was younger, and had replaced the eyeball with a magical green gem,[4] which obviously made him somewhat memorable and rather intimidating.[6]
Personailty[]
Gamalon was haughty and self-assured, and loved nothing more than a challenge. Having been a great adventurer and explorer, Gamalon embraced the life of a family man once he retired, and preferred to spend his time at home.[3] While he generally didn't welcome visitors into his home, Gamalon enjoyed swapping stories and spending time with regular customers in his curio shop.[5]
Possessions[]
Gamalon had replaced his missing left eye with a unique variant of a gem of seeing, which also provided him with darkvision and the ability to detect magic.[6]
Gamalon also possessed a pair of bracers of defense, a pair of boots of starstriding, a cloak of the bat, and was armed with a staff of the magi.[3][4]
Gamalon had purchased some land from the Crown some years ago, making him a land-owning noble on Bral. He opened a small store known as Gamalon's Curios, which was well stocked with unusual magical items that were of interest to spacefarers. Behind the store was his home, which consisted of a broad courtyard surrounded by several buildings.[5]
Relationships[]
Family[]
Once he had retired to Bral, Gamalon became a family man.[3] He married a woman named Mynda, and together they had a daughter named Lara.[2]
Friends[]
Gamalon was friends with Elminster, the Sage of Shadowdale,[3] and was a long time acquaintance of both Khelben Arunsun and his wife, Laeral Silverhand.[1] He also maintained friendly relations with several arcane spellcasters in other crystal spheres.[3]
Gamalon was a longtime friend and adventuring partner of Cap'n Gyudd, and after they both retired on Bral, they would often send business each other's way. When customers approached Cap'n Gyudd looking for magical items, he would send them to Gamalon's store, while Gamalon would send the more "traditional" buyers Gyudd's way.[7]
Mentors[]
Unusually, Gamalon had established a working relationship with the Arcane, who were even willing to share some of their knowledge related to crafting spelljamming technology.[5]
Rivals[]
Soon after Gamalon had opened his store, a mage named Gaspar set up his own company in direct competition. As a result, Gamalon had a somewhat poor opinion of his rival,[2] and would often undercut Gaspar's best prices on similar magic items.[8]
Activities[]
When a hidden cache of orbus rings was discovered on the Rock, Gamalon, with the aid of the Arcane, was able to reverse engineer the process required to create them. For a long time, he was the only known distributor of new orbus rings, as the process remained a closely guarded secret.[9]
