Refuge is a small crystal sphere controlled by the Arcane and named for the moon Refuge.[1]

Overview[]

Refuge is a small crystal sphere located close to Realmspace that is controlled by the Arcane. It serves as a way-station for beleaguered spacefarers, where aid and supplies can be found. Refuge’s large sun has only one planet, its' single moon Refuge, and a small outer planetoid.[2]

Location[]

Refuge is part of a stable configuration of spheres within the phlogiston, known as the Arcane Inner Flow. Refuge connects to Realmspace and Pirtel.[3]

Celestial Bodies[]

Refuge is a heliocentric system, with the system primary, a fire body known as the Sun, lying at the center of the sphere and orbited by a planet, its satellite, and a small outer planetoid.

The Sun[]

The Sun[note 1] is a large fire body that serves as the system primary for the crystal sphere.[2]

Below[]

Below is an uninhabited planet with dense jungles and shallow seas that provides passing spelljamming ships with free air and water. However, to prevent visitors from landing and exploring or performing their own repairs, the Arcane regularly stock the planet with monstrous creatures gleaned from hundreds of worlds.[4]

The Salvage Ring[]

Below is orbited by a huge ring made of salvage, spare-parts and scrap tethered together. The Arcane buy derelict spelljammers (no questions asked) and sell the salvage to desperate crews as replacements parts. Pirates, scavvers, and other spacefaring monsters have been known to lurk amidst the chaos, but the Salvage Ring is regularly patrolled by Giff hired by the Arcane to prevent attempts to steal from the ring or settle within it.[4]

Refuge[]

Refuge, for which the crystal sphere is named, is the only moon in orbit around the planet Below. Refuge is the single largest off-world base known to spacefaring humans where the Arcane build, repair, and modify ships (for the usual high prices). Established and controlled by the Arcane, it is safer and far more tightly controlled than the (in)famous Rock of Bral.[5]

The Guardian Ring[]

Refuge is protected by a ring of 24 stone golems floating around the base. Known as 'Space Golems', these guardians are a gnomish invention and can be found elsewhere in wildspace, usually guarding planetoid bases or gnomish cities on worlds that gnomes share with threatening neighbors. The Space Golems are essentially large stone golems fitted with minor helms, two ballistae and accommodation for soldiers.[4]

Welcome[]

Welcome is a small planetoid found at the outer edge of the system, where it welcomes visitors to the sphere. Welcome serves as a naval base, and houses a powerful defensive navy (of various types of ships) and is equipped with hidden repair docks of its own. At least 50 ships are based on and in Welcome, and are used to escort or tow crippled ships into Refuge, to quarantine suspected “plague ships” (carriers of disease) or “bomb ships” (sent regularly by the neogi and the eye tyrants, who would like to seize Refuge), and to break up any running battles that come into the sphere from the Flow outside.[4]
