Azer

The Azer, also known as Azar,[1] are very rare elemental creatures from the Spelljammer campaign setting.[2][3]

Overview[]

The azer are a race of humanoid creatures that normally inhabit the Elemental Plane of Fire. Except under special circumstances, they are very rarely found in wildspace.[2][3]

Description[]

Azer physically resemble dwarves, except they have brass-colored, metallic skin and flames for hair. They only wear kilts or apron-like garments made of beaten brass, copper or bronze.[2][3]

Personality[]

In general, azer are unfriendly and taciturn, and they lack compassion. They are known to capture and interrogate intruders, and particularly dangerous or violent prisoners are slain out of hand. They can be greedy, particularly for gems that are a clear purple or red color (rubies, amethysts, garnets, etc.). However, once given, the word of an azer is a solid bond.[2][3]

Combat[]

Azer use broad-bladed javelins and mallet-like weapons in battle (equivalent to a footman's mace). Creatures not immune to fire suffer additional damage from the heat of an azer's weapons or if they are grappled by an azer.[2][3]

Azer are vulnerable to cold-based attacks and take additional damage.

Society[]

On their home plane, Azer are part of an extremely regimented society, under the command of their ruler Amaimon. Within this society, every individual has their own place. In general, azer civilization is heavily stratified, with law taking precedence over individual freedoms — even an individual’s life, if it comes to that.[4][3]

Azer construct their outposts and cities as complexes of towers built from basalt, granite, or metal. There they dwell in small groups, growing strange trees with metallic bark and leaves made entirely of metal — in some cases, precious metals.[4][3]

It is not known just what - if anything - azer eat. Their only natural enemies are other intelligent fire-dwelling creatures, including efreeti and salamanders.[3][1]

There are notable communities of azer on the planets Garrash[2] in Vistaspace and on Sirrion in Krynspace.[1]

  • Aladair is a noble who commands the azer outpost on the floating continent of Zaberie on Garrash.[4]
  • Amaimon is the ruler of the azer[2][3] who sent an expeditionary force to claim the planet Garrash.[4]

Signature Spelljammers[]

None. The azer have little understanding of spelljamming. They know that there are other forms of life in the universe - creatures that aren't fire-dwelling - but they can barely conceive of how these creatures exist.[4] However, the azer of Sirrion maintain a spelljamming port, along with the efreeti community. The port is large and impressive, but has few visitors, and not everyone who visits leaves - displeasing or offending the azer or the efreet port masters is a capitol offence.[5]
