A Crown of the Void is a magical item from the Spelljammer campaign setting.[1]

Description[]

A crown of the void typically appears as an unadorned metal circlet.

Powers[]

A crown of the void operates automatically, whether it is worn or not, and continuously generates an "atmospheric bubble" of air around itself, with the same purity of air that surrounded its creator at the time of its enchantment. The extent of the bubble of air is mentally controlled by the owner, who has to be wearing the crown, and must be sane, conscious, and not engaged in spellcasting to change it. The air envelope can extend from a minimum radius of 10-feet to a maximum of 90-feet. The air envelope cannot be ‘turned off’, cannot be extended beyond the 90-foot radius, and when willfully changed, alters its radius by 10-feet per round.

In wildspace, the crown can be used to keep a drifting individual alive indefinitely, or to continually renew the atmosphere of a ship. The air generated by the crown displaces fouled or poisonous gases from its area of effect within 1-2 rounds. Note that a ship with a crown of the void on board can safely maintain larger numbers of crew and passengers for longer periods of time than an equivalent sized ship.

The air envelope generated by a crown of the void can not be "stolen" by a larger body in space, since it is maintained around the crown itself. if a crown is destroyed, the atmospheric envelope dissipates or disappears instantly. If a crown of the void is placed within an operating furnace and used to power a ship, it ceases to function instantly.

History[]

Hurricane Halvor maintains the atmospheric envelope of his mobile Spacedock with three crowns of the void, which are hidden throughout the asteroid.

A crown of the void should not be confused with a crown of the stars. Both items are very difficult to make, and the few mages who know how to make such crowns usually lack some of the very rare ingredients necessary to craft them.
