Celestian, also known as the Far Wanderer[1][2][3] or the Star Wanderer[4][5][6], is the Oeridian god of stars, space, and wanderers from the crystal sphere known as Greyspace.[7][1][2][11][8][3]

Overview[]

Celestian, the Star Wanderer, is the brother of Fharlanghn, the Dweller on the Far Horizon. While Fharlanghn chose to wander the roads and lands of Oerth, Celestian took to the stars and the Astral Plane, roaming the wondrous depths of space. The Star Wanderer is revered by astronomers, astrologers, philosophers, navigators, and dreamers and poets.[8][3]

Description[]

Celestian appears as a tall, lean middle-aged ebony skinned man[7], with black eyes. He is quick but silent in his movements, and rarely speaks. He wears dark colored clothing, speckled with stars, and always wears a piece of jewelry resembling his symbol, inset with a shining ruby, a jacinth, a topaz, an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond.[1][3]

Abilities[]

Celestian can, at will, create a sheet of shifting, dancing light which envelopes himself, or another creature of his choice. He can call down a flaming comet, igniting flammable materials and emitting clouds of poisonous gas. He can also call down heat lightning, burning opponents and fusing non-magical metals. He can create meteors that hurtle from his hands, or duplicate the chill and vacuum of space. He can also blind opponents with the light of the stars.[3]

Holy symbol[]

Celestian's holy symbol is an arc of seven stars within a black circle.[10][2][11][8]

Favored weapon[]

Celestian does not have a favored weapon. Instead he may choose to carry one or more of a wide selection of weapons at his disposal, including a longbow, a 5-foot spear (that can be magically extended by another 5 feet), a short sword, a battleaxe (that can be thrown), or a dagger made of some unbreakable material.[3] Celestian's priesthood has selected the shortspear as their signature weapon.[7][1]

Realm[]

Celestian spends most of his time on the Astral Plane, but chooses not to establish a divine realm, preferring to wander the planes instead.[2]

Worship[]

The Celestians are a loosely knit organization of wanderers. Emulating their deity, they travel the endless reaches of the stars, spending a great deal of their time away from their home temple. In fact, they are expected to travel extensively in wildspace, and seek to visit as much of the Known Spheres as they can in their lifetimes. They are aided in this by the fact that they can recover their spells in the wildspace of any crystal sphere. Most are skilled navigators and astronomers and are highly sought as crew members of ships exploring new areas. The priests of Celestian are on very good terms with the Seekers and often cooperate closely with them, but they are rivals of the priests of Ptah. Celestian's priests affect a total lack of concern for worldly matters: travelling and learning are their only aspirations.

Celestian shrines are always in wildspace, beyond the reach of planetary influences. However, they do maintain a number of hospices in many wildspace settlements. These are run by members of the organization who have decided to settle for a time, and provide safe food and lodging to other Celestians. They also provide aid to good-aligned travelers who are not members of the sect, but who have fallen on hard times. They assist newcomers to a sphere with advice about the local customs and laws, and will even help them find work should the need arise. It is customary to leave a donation (or, if destitute, to provide one when funds are available) for these services, but there is no set schedule of fees. Celestian hospices in poorly traveled areas may appreciate tales of travel more than a token donation of gold.[5][11][8]

In Spelljammer[]

Celestian is a member of the Oeridian pantheon and is native to Greyspace.[4] One of the more popular deities among spacefarers, the worship of Celestian spread from Greyspace about 300 years ago and now spans a half dozen spheres.[8]
