Boccob, known as the Uncaring, is a god of magic, arcane knowledge, foresight and balance from the crystal sphere known as Greyspace.[4][1][6][5][3]
Overview[]
Boccob is a distant deity who promotes magic as the most important force in the world. As such he seeks to balance law and chaos, and to push back against the encroachments of both good and evil. Boccob oversees the maintenance of magic, and is very interested in the creation of new magic items and spells.[1][5][3]
Description[]
Boccob appears as a handsome man of indeterminate age, wearing loose purple garments covered in shimmering golden runes that shift and change.[1]
Abilities[]
Boccob can create a Disc of Concordant Opposition which combines energies from all planes, and is capable of destroying any creature without significant resistance to magic.[3]
Holy symbol[]
Boccob's holy symbol is an eye within a pentagram[4][5] or an eye balanced on a pedestal within a pentagram.[1][6]
Favored weapon[]
Boccob wields a quarterstaff known as the Staff of Boccob.[1]
Possessions[]
Boccob possesses the Staff of Boccob, which combines the powers of a staff of the magi, a staff of power, and a defending quarterstaff.[1] Alternatively, he wields a staff of the archmage, which combines the powers of a staff of the magi and a wand of conjuration.[3]
Realm[]
Boccob makes his home in a sprawling citadel known as the Library of Lore, located on the Concordant Domain of the Outlands. This enormous complex sits on top of a barren bluff, and the only access is through a single great staircase guarded by elder elementals. None may gain access to the Library without the permission of these great elementals, who answer only to Boccob. The walls of the citadel are proof against teleportation and astral meddling, and within the Library itself, spells that access other planes do not function. The Library of Lore retains a copy of every single non-artifact magic item created by mortal hands, as well as all known lore related to magic in the world.[7][1][8]
Worship[]
The Priests of Boccob remain aloof from worldly affairs, and instead devote themselves to magical research and divining the future. Boccob's clergy actively create magical items, which they happily sell to anyone who can afford them. During times of war, priests of Boccob remain neutral and sell magic items to all sides. Many of Boccob's priests are kept busy investigating magical lore or recovering lost magical items. They also adamantly oppose any attempt to destroy magical places or items. Priests of Boccob are neutral, as extremism in ethos is discouraged: they must seek to maintain the balance between all alignments.[1][5]
In Spelljammer[]
Boccob is a member of the Greyhawk pantheon and is native to Greyspace. However, when a priest of Boccob travels beyond the Grinder, they lose access to any special powers granted to them by Boccob. When a priest of Boccob travels into the Flow, the cannot regain their spells until they return to wildspace. However, they can still cast spells directly related to the acquisition of knowledge.[2]
