Armor of the Arcane is a suit of magical armor used exclusively by the Arcane from the Spelljammer campaign setting.[1]

Description[]

A few Arcane have been encountered wearing these relatively scarce suits of magical armor. The arcane never sell or give away suits of this armor, and most are linked to the wearer's lifeforce and will slowly melt or dissolve should the wearer be slain.

Powers[]

Armor of the Arcane has a +3 enhancement bonus, and absorbs a portion of all damage inflicted upon its wearer. It also renders the wearer immune to all forms of natural and magical mental coercion or control, and the effects of all poisonous gases and vapours. The armor absorbs all cantrips and spells of 3rd level or less cast on its wearer, and uses the magical energy to maintain and repair itself. A suit of armor of the arcane can absorb between 13-32 points of damage before dissolving, but can use any magical energy it absorbs to regain some of its integrity. The armor regenerates 1 point of damage for every cantrip absorbed, and 2 points of damage for every spell level. However, if the spell would have dealt direct damage to the wearer, the armor gains hit points equivalent to the damage that would have been dealt.

Direct damage from 4th level spells or greater are absorbed by the armor until it reaches its' limit and is destroyed. All other spell effects of this level bypass the armor completely, unless they involve poisonous gasses or mental attacks. Finally, a suit of armor of the Arcane confers 90-foot (28 meter) infravision upon any wearer who does not already possess this ability naturally.

History[]

An Arcane who sees any non-Arcane wearing this armor will immediately confront them. The Arcane will offer the person wearing the armor any magical item they wish, in exchange for the armor as well as how they came to possess it. Those who refuse the offer, or demand too great a reward, or offer up an unbelievable tale will be subject to continuous harassment and attacks from hired underlings. The attacks will continue until the armor is destroyed or surrendered, even if it means the death of the wearer.

Anyone trying to impersonate an Arcane successfully will need to somehow duplicate their telepathic powers, and will need to know a great deal about Arcane society, values and aims.
