Aebrynis is a celestial body that orbits the system primary[note 2][note 3] of the crystal sphere known as Aebrynisspace.[1][2] This spherical[note 1] earth body is home to the BIRTHRIGHT Campaign Setting,[5] and has one moon.[3]

Overview[]

Aebrynis is considered a backwater world, without any sites of interest.[6] The best known region is the small continent of Cerilia which lies in the northern hemisphere of the planet. Cerilia is a chaotic patchwork of nations, cultures, and religions, and has traditionally been divided into five regions named for the dominant human tribe that first settled there. In the southwestern corner of Cerilia lies war-torn Anuire, a green and fair land with broad and fertile river valleys, rolling hills and highlands, and the most favourable weather in Cerila, Once the home of the ancient Anuirean Empire, Anuire is now broken up into dozens of rival baronies, duchies and free cities. To the north lies the lands of Brechtür, which is divided by the massive gulf known as the Krakennauricht ("Kraken's Reach"). This mountainous land, with its rocky shores and narrow fjords is home to a sea faring people. The southernmost portion of Cerilia is known as Khinasi, a warm and sometimes arid land of vast plains and warm forests. To the northwest lie the Rjurik highlands, a cold, rugged land of sparsely inhabited forests, downlands and mountains. To the northeast lie the most desolate and remote region of Cerila, known as Vosgaard. A land of stark beauty, Vosgaard is made up of impassable mountains and glaciers, vast belt of taiga (waterlogged forests), and bitter wind-swept plains.[7]

To the southeast of Cerilia, across the Straits of Aerele, lies the continent of Aduria, the original homeland of the human tribes that would eventually settle in Cerilia. To the north, across the Sea of Glittering Ice and the Thaelasian Passage, lies the enormous frozen continent of Thaele.[8] To the east, across the Sea of Dragons and beyond the Dragon Isles, lies the distant and mysterious lands of Djapar.[9][7]

Inhabitants[]

Cerilia is dominated by five human tribes, namely the imperialistic and warlike Anuireans, the pragmatic and mercantile Brechts, the magic-loving Khinasi, the hardy and nature-loving Rjurik and the brutal and cruel Vos.[10][11] However, humans are not native to Cerilia:[12] instead the indigenous population of Cerilia originally included the reclusive elves (known as the Sidhelien)[13], the stone-like dwarves,[14] and the warm-hearted halflings (themselves immigrants from the Shadow World).[15]

While human, elven and dwarven kingdoms dominate the lands of Cerilia, there are numerous other races which are powerful in their own right, and while only a few actively vie to control Cerilia, most are noteworthy in some way. Goblins[16], gnolls, orogs[17] and other such creatures have lived in Cerilia for thousands of years. The most dominant are the goblins, who are well organised and intelligent, and control vast stretches of land in Anuire, Rjurik and Vosgaard. The orogs reside deep beneath Cerilia's mountain ranges within dark fortress-cities and live in a state of constant warfare.[18] Other major races include half-elves, gnomes, trolls, ogres, giants and a handful of dragons unique to Cerilia.[19][20]

Bloodlines[]

Over 1,500 years ago,[21] the old gods of Aduria, accompanied by their mortal champions, met in battle on the slopes of Mount Deismaar. In an effort to destroy Azrai the Shadow and his evil minions, the remaining gods poured all their energy into one final strike. The resulting explosion vaporized Mount Deismaar, leveling the land for miles around and creating what is now known as the Straits of Aerele. The divine essence released by the destruction of the old gods passed on to eight of their most devoted mortal champions, those who exemplified their most dearly held ideals, and elevated them as Cerialia's new gods. They include Haelyn, god of nobility and war; Erik, god of woods and streams; Sera, goddess of fortune; Avani, goddess of the sun; Kriesha, the Ice Lady; Belinik, the Prince of Terror; Nesirie, goddess of the sea; and Ruornil, god of the moon and magic.

However, other champions who were present at Deismaar were also imbued with divine essence, granting them wondrous abilities that reflected the power of the gods. These champions, known as the blooded, discovered that their divine essence would propagate within their direct descendants, forming what became known as bloodlines, and soon enough these bloodlines would become the rulers of the various territories of Cerilia. The blooded also discovered that they could rip the divine essence from similarly empowered foes they had killed, adding it to their own, and gaining in strength and power. This act became known as bloodtheft.

Those who absorbed enough (possibly too much) divine essence began to transform. Those who were imbued with the essence of Azrai became monstrous and twisted, deformed in both mind and body. Known as awnsheghlien ("blood of darkness"), some of the more powerful of these abominations, such as the Gorgon, would go on to rule kingdoms of their own. Fortunately, the scions of the gods managed to empower themselves through their rulership of the land, or by defeating their enemies, although they too began to transform. The power within the blood always has a price.[22]

Trade[]

The most important ports on Aebrynis include the City of Anuire, former capital of the Anuirean Empire; Masetiele, capital of the small island nation of Suiriene, which has the largest navy on Cerilia, and Ariya, one of the oldest of the Basarji city states, which is located on the shores of the southern Sea of the Golden Sun, one of Cerilia's busiest waterways.[7]

Satellites[]

Aebrynis has a single moon.[2][3]

Notes[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 Because Aebrynis experiences 'axial precession', resulting in equinoxes and solstices, as well as various seasons, this article assumes that the planet is spherical in shape and rotates around its own axis.
  2. 2.0 2.1 Because Aebrynis undergoes 'general precession', as shown by the movement of the stars, as well as experiencing various seasons and an annual meteor shower, this article assumes that the planet orbits around its primary sun.
  3. 3.0 3.1 The human racial group known as the Khinasi believe that the sun circles Aebrynis each day, though there is no proof to validate this belief.
